Reduce Islamic Terror Threats

The recent Islamic terror attack on Bondi beach in Australia may have shocked many. Australians enjoy going to beaches and Bondi is an icon in Sydney, also a famous tourist site worldwide. Perhaps the most shocking was how Matilda, the lovely 10 year old girl, was killed. She was not killed by spray bullets, but by one bullet aimed at her while she tried to flee from the scene. But if you paid attention to the 10-7 massacre in Israel, nothing would shock you. For example, a terrorist killed a baby in a microwave.
Alexander Downer, a long term foreign minister, wrote a short commentary [1] shortly after the massacre: “[Australians] are shocked because these sorts of incidents occur in other countries, but not in quiet, liberal, tolerant Australia.” The whole commentary is very good. I strongly encourage you to read it yourself. Due to copyright concerns, I only quote a few passages below.
[Only two days after the Oct.7 terrorist attack] There was a demonstration outside the Sydney Opera House where demonstrators were heard shouting “gas the Jews” or “where’s the Jews?”. Synagogues have been burnt to the ground, and anti-Semitic slogans have been spray-painted on to the walls of Jewish schools and houses owned by Jews.
Elements of the Australian media have made their own contribution to this atmosphere. The ABC has frequently taken at face value claims made by Hamas, a terrorist organisation, against the Israel Defence Forces. Much of the reporting coming out of the Middle East was deeply hostile to Israel.
And then there’s the Australian government. Australia traditionally has been a strong supporter of Israel and its right to exist. This time, the Australian government has picked up on anti-Israeli media reports inspired by Hamas propaganda and chastised the Israeli government during the war in Gaza.
It has frequently condemned the Netanyahu government and astonishingly decided to use this time to announce its recognition of a Palestinian state. It would be nice to think the Australian government had been inspired by principle, but it hasn’t. It’s been inspired by politics.
The above reminds me of the Biden Administration (in)actions. When Hamas sympathizers held gatherings around American and other nations’ campuses, initially Biden did nothing. It grew bigger and bigger and more violent. If you let Islamist activities fester, they will be bolder. They will test more boundaries. They will not stop until their ultimate goals are achieved. That is a global intifada, i.e. kill Jews and make terror attacks everywhere in the world.
Now a reflection of my observations might help to reduce Islamic terror threats. The leaders need to take strong actions early, before things get out of control. Forget about vote counts. I believe both Biden and the Labor Administrations had too much political calculation. Radical Islam is evil.
Consider and compare the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan with the Ukraine-Russia War. We all know that Afghans gave up quickly despite superior numbers and arms. On the other hand, Ukraine soldiers and civilians fought hard. Two points about the Afghan war. Afghans thought that they were fighting for Americans because Americans gave them money and arms. Once Americans were leaving, they did not want to fight. Ukrainians, on the other hand, are fighting for themselves.
The majority of Muslims have low conviction of radical (Islamic) ideologies. (This is for another day.) How many Muslims belong to the hardcore of course depends on many things. But if the radicals look like winning, many Muslims will be convinced that Allah is on their side and they should join to get some fruits. As more Muslims join them, the harder it is to control.
So it is important to be strong and firm early. After the US government adopted harsh measures, pro-Palestine activities have died down in the US.
